Renting a crane to set roof trusses in Naples

Trusses are light. A roof full of them isn't, and they're long and floppy in the air. A boom truck sets most Naples house packages in a day. The span, the reach over the walls and the number of picks set the price.

The short answer

A single wood roof truss for a house weighs roughly 120 to 350 pounds, so the crane is sized by reach and by how many picks there are, not by weight. HomeAdvisor puts the crane for a truss install at $300 to $1,000 depending on time. Published operated boom truck rates run about $125 to $250 an hour with a 3 to 4 hour minimum plus travel.

  • Have the truss drawings on site. They list each truss's span and where it sits.
  • Count the trusses and note the longest span. Over 30 feet calls for a spreader bar.
  • Walls, beams and bearing points must be done and braced before the crane arrives.
  • Set the whole package in one visit. A second trip means a second minimum.

Do you need a crane to set trusses?

On a one-story garage with short trusses, a crew can sometimes hand them up. On most Naples houses, no. Trusses land on top of the walls, a story or two up, and a 36 foot truss is a long, flexible piece that bends sideways if it’s lifted wrong. A boom truck picks each truss off the stack and hands it to the crew on the wall, one after another.

The pick is also safer. Hansen Buildings, which designs truss packages, tells builders flatly to use equipment rather than lift trusses by hand.

How heavy is a roof truss?

Lighter than the crane, every time. The truss maker’s drawings list the real weights. For planning, here are rough single-truss figures from a supplier:

Approximate weight of one wood roof truss by span
SpanApprox. weight
24 ft120 to 150 lb
30 ft160 to 200 lb
36 ft220 to 300 lb
40 ft270 to 350 lb
50 ft375 to 500 lb
60 ft450 to 600 lb

What sizes the crane is reach. If the truck can park beside the wall, a small boom truck sets the whole roof. If the far wall is 60 feet back across a pool or a lot full of block, the crane needs more boom, and capacity drops as the boom reaches out.

Truss sets are mostly billed by the hour, so the crew’s readiness is the price. A crane waiting on a wall to be braced is billed the same as a crane lifting. The crane cost breakdown shows how to compare two quotes line by line, and the towns we cover page shows drive times, which travel is billed on.

How the crane sets trusses

  1. Walls ready and braced

SBCA says to connect every bearing wall, column, header and beam before trusses go up. Stopping mid-set to fix a wall is dangerous, and the crane clock keeps running.

  2. Rig each truss right

Pick at the top chord near the joints, never by the peak or the webs. Up to 30 feet, two pick points about half the truss length apart work. From 30 to 60 feet, BCSI calls for a spreader bar 1/2 to 2/3 of the truss length.

  3. Tag lines and a clear zone

The crew steadies each truss with tag lines. OSHA keeps workers out from under the load.

  4. Brace as you go

Each truss gets temporary restraint before the next one lands, per the drawings and BCSI-B1. Then the girders and hip sets.

Cranes for LVL and steel beams

A beam is one heavy, long pick instead of thirty light ones. One LVL maker lists a 1-3/4 by 11-7/8 inch ply at 5.9 pounds a foot, so a three-ply 20 foot beam is about 350 pounds. A steel W8x18 beam weighs 18 pounds a foot, which is what the second number means. Both are fine for a boom truck if it can get close. They often ride along on the truss day so the crane comes once.

Before the crane comes

  • Truss drawings on site: the residential code requires approved truss design drawings before installation, delivered with the trusses.
  • Bearing points done: walls, beams, posts and headers set and braced.
  • Stack placed well: trusses delivered within the crane's reach and stored on blocking off the ground.
  • Truck spot: firm, level ground for the outriggers, not over a septic field, new pipe or a fresh pool deck.
  • Street use: ask the operator who pulls any right-of-way permit and whether it is in the price.
  • City limits: the City of Naples and Marco Island run their own building departments.

The trusses weigh a few hundred pounds. Whether the walls are ready decides what you pay.

Questions people ask

How much does a crane to set trusses cost?

HomeAdvisor lists $300 to $1,000 for the crane on a truss install, depending on how long it takes. Operated boom trucks run about $125 to $250 an hour with a 3 to 4 hour minimum plus travel. A Naples price comes from the operator once they know the truss count, the span and the site.

How long does it take a crane to set trusses?

HomeAdvisor says a three-person crew with the right lifting equipment can set a full set of trusses on a house in a single day. Complex roof shapes or tight crane access can stretch it.

Can a boom truck set trusses?

Usually, for a one or two-story house. The truck needs firm ground for its outriggers within reach of the walls. Long spans, a lot set far back from the street or a big commercial package can need a larger mobile crane.

Do I need a crane for an LVL beam?

Often, once it's long or more than one ply. One manufacturer lists a 1-3/4 by 11-7/8 inch LVL at 5.9 pounds a foot, so a three-ply 20 foot beam is roughly 350 pounds before hardware, and it has to go up onto posts or a wall. Give the operator the size, the plies and the length.

Is this site a crane company?

No. We don't own cranes, run lifts or set prices. This site explains crane rental in the Naples area and keeps your numbers in one place, ready to price. Because we don't run cranes, the guides stick to what an operator will ask and what published rates say.
